The photographs reveal the lion standing on his hind legs, baring his teeth, and grinning as he prepares to mate.
According to Ilha, the courtship begins when the female signals her readiness by raising her tail and provoking the male with rubbing or crawling.

This interaction is followed by a prolonged mating session lasting up to five days, during which the lions may mate up to 200 times, with each act occurring approximately every 20 minutes.
One of the images shows the lion roaring in anticipation while the lioness lies on her back, setting the stage for mating.
Another image captures a young male lion displaying its fangs beside the lioness, highlighting moments of tension and excitement.

The sunset light of the Maasai Mara adds a poetic backdrop to these scenes, emphasizing the reserve’s renowned biodiversity, including its populations of lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
Ilha’s photos document the courtship and capture the raw emotions and interactions between the animals.
He remarks, “I like my photos to capture some interaction, whether among animals, nature, or advancing civilization.”
